What We've Accomplished

Hammond 6th District Councilman & Family

What We've Done

As Hammond's 6th District Councilman, besides my family, I have worked tirelessly to make our community my main priority. As a life-long Hammond resident, democrat, and a firefighter for 36 years, I know the importance of community and the challenges that many of my constituents face each day to succeed in business and life. In 2015, when I retired from the Hammond fire department, I wanted to make a difference in Hessville. I wanted my children and grandchildren to grow up in a community that shared the same commitment to family values, strong community, and helping others achieve their goals. Since I was elected Hammond's 6th District Councilman, I believe we have accomplished and strive to make a better community. Building our community together by working with the city of Hammond, neighborhoods, organizations, businesses, and those who have a collective work ethic, we have reached many goals and have set the ground work for continued successes.

Community Engagement

  • Serve as a board member of HUGS Cultural Committee, which sponsors 2 Annual Mexican Independence Day parades in Hessville and Mariachi festivals in Hessville Park.
  • Serve as a board member of HC3, that hosts many community outreach events to improve the Hessville neighborhood, such as the Spring and Fall Clean-up events and the restoration of the Hansen Branch Library.
  • Strongly believe in the mission of HC3 "Strengthening Hessville through philanthropic, cultural, educational, and economic development and to promote revitalization, safety, and beautification within the entire community."
  • Attend ribbon-cutting and grand openings of new businesses and welcome them to our city.
  • Attend memorial services, charitable fundraisers, and parades to honor our veterans and first responders..
  • Participate in city parades to celebrate holidays with the community.
  • Extensive community outreach.
  • Available and accessible to residents at community meetings.  Returns phone calls in a prompt manner.

Public Safety

  • Worked with the city of Hammand's department leaders and workers to help meet the needs of Hessville residents.
  • Have utilized the 311 services to help give citizens the chance to connect with the city of Hammond with the concerns of code violations in their neighborhoods.
  • Voted for funds and grants to help our police and fire departments.
  •  Sponsored ordinances and resolutions for updated equipment including new air tank/masks and crime fighting "Blue wave"  license reading cameras.
  •  Close relations with Hessville Crime Watch officers and attend crime watch meetings.

  • Leveraged funds towards the parks in Hessville, such as Amy Park and Hessville Park.  Both parks have seen big improvement by supplementing  funds provided by Mayor McDermott and park bonds.
